“I really like the friendly and multicultural environment in UKPS”
When Khawer joined UKPS in 2017 on the Graduate Training Programme, he was not the typical graduate recruit.
While all of the graduates on the programme have a degree in engineering, Khawer had a Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering (following a four-year programme at NED University in Pakistan) and a Masters in Energy Management (from an additional two-and-a-half-year programme, also at NED University). He also had industry experience, having worked in the distribution department of a multi-utility company. There he was responsible for planning maintenance for commercial/industrial substations and providing technical assistance to customers.
When he moved to the UK, his experience in the multi-utility industry inspired him to apply for a role with UKPS. Following a successful interview with Estimating Manager Jason Phillips, Khawer was offered a job in the Head Office in Stonehouse. A few months later, he completed his relocation from Hereford to Gloucester, where he has now happily settled.
“I was happy to join UKPS. As it was my first job in the UK I was a bit nervous but I found the UKPS team were very welcoming. I have had help from people in every department which helped me to stop feeling like a new starter within a few weeks. In the beginning, I received training from a Senior Estimating Engineer. She was an invaluable source of information and I learned quickly. Within a few months, I was reporting directly to the Manager who, despite that fact that I wasn’t freshly out of university, suggested I join the Graduate Training Programme to learn more about the UK industry training standards. UKPS is a fast-growing Multi-Utility company, so in a few years, I’d like to be a professional engineer in the Multi-Utility industry.”
The Graduate Training Scheme didn’t just give Khawer an overview of the UK trading standards and UKPS’s working methods – it also enabled him to get to know almost everyone in the Design and Estimating teams in Stonehouse and across all UKPS offices. From being new to the country, the town and the company, he is now on friendly terms with the whole team in the estimating department and is an absolute asset to the company. His hard work and professionalism have earned him rapid promotions – he is now a Senior Estimating Engineer.
